Recently I have been working with foam core, task board and aluminum. These materials are easily manipulated into lightweight objects that can be hung on the wall. For me there are no obvious references to imagery in these pieces. I start by imagining a shape and then work it out against the wall altering it perhaps the way a potter manipulates clay pushing and pulling angles. The form then suggests how the black will interact with it and connect it to the wall. In some of the pieces there is a visual sequence that moves from object, to actual plane, to implied plane. There is an ambiguity in the relationship between these planes that the viewer resolves by moving around the pieces. The color comes last and is sometimes the hardest part because I don’t want it to appear as an arbitrary choice. I want to feel that it could be no other color but the one I have mixed from dry pigments and applied in matte layers. The finished pieces stand alone without reference to other situations. The viewer should not think beyond the object they are seeing.
